Hi, I have two female gerbils, three and a half months old females, sisters.
They got on really well till today, suddenly Merlini is really skitish, would not come out the house so we could clean the cage out and she usually is the first out and taking the tunnel to the play pen. Also she has become scared of her sister it would seem, she darts around to get away from her, seems nervous and she toys with her food and sits under a blue triangle of wood out the way, but if her sister comes near, you blink and she is on the other side of her cage.
I am rather concerned, I am not sure why there is such a sudden behaviour change, she seems happy enough to interact with my hand and my boyfriend's handds when they are in the cage but outside in the play pen she hides in a box and does not leave it often. It took half an hour to get an accurate weight on her. She is 57grams whilst her sister is 56grams, so since their last weigh in Merlini has gained a gram and Houdini two (We weigh every two days as requested by the vet after she noticed that Houdini was noticably smaller than her sister). Now they look the same size almost.

That is rather odd. . . is Merlini showing any signs of sickness or injury? Or is Houdini acting aggressive or dominant towards her? My best guess is that either something is wrong with Merlini (sickness or injury) and it is effecting her behavior, or that something about the environment, perhaps Houdini's behavior towards her, is scaring her. Maybe someone else has a better idea?
