I was playing with my little gerbil the other day, and I was wearing a long sleeved black shirt. After a few minutes I noticed quite a bit of fur was on my sleeves. I had heard that loss of fur can indicate a gerbil is sick, but he seems very healthy to me. His eyes look normal, and he is very active and is acting normal. So I was wondering if I should be worried or is it normal. Do gerbils shed like cats and dogs?

Was it in clumps/tufts or just a few stray hairs? I've never noticed mine shed before but yes, they do shed. 2-4 times a year starting at 8 weeks if I remember correctly. How old is your gerbil? I'd keep an eye on him because yes, fur loss can indicate a sick gerbil as well.

what a beautiful gerbil, I've had 4 black/white gerbils and they were all sweet gerbils, what is his name? I would only worry if he was losing a lot and had bald spots or was showing other symptoms.

Thanks, Catnut and 3rin. His name is Divot, and he's about 3 months old. No the hair isn't coming out in clumps, just stray hair here and there. I might not have noticed it if I hadn't been wearing black, and everything shows up on black. He doesn't have any bald spots either. I'm glad it doesn't sound serious. Thanks again both of you for your help!
