I gave my gerbil boys a hay/straw house, which they promptly took apart and used along with bedding to make a huge mound in the corner of their twenty gallon tank. They then built a tunnel into it and that's where they sleep. Last week, I cleaned the tank around the mound, removing the bedding and cleaning the bottom, but I left the mound intact. My question is how long can I do this for? I hate to destroy their hard work, but I do want to keep there tank clean. I would appreciate any advice.

You could purchase a wooden hut which would last a lot, lot longer. Or if you'd like, you can buy them a new hay/straw house like you did before and let them do what they did again. It would keep them busy and prevent boredom. Leaving the mound there may not be the best idea in the sense that they get bored of their surroundings if they're kept like that for too long. You could also deconstruct the mound and put it in a different corner of their house and let them re-make it and while you change it you can take out the bits of poop that are most likely in there. But it's completely up to you, those are just a few of my ideas

They have several wooden huts which they chew on but in which they won't sleep. I have been cleaning around the mound once a week and I have been dumping the entire mound once every 2-3 weeks to do a thorough cleaning of the whole tank. Is that enough or do I need to get rid of the whole mound every week? It's a beautiful, well-constructed mound.

That would be enough, yes, I'm sure they don't mind as they get to reconstruct something new.

Well, I just did a complete cleaning. The mound is gone. They have completely new bedding, except for some old I left for the scent. They have a new straw house and their old wooden ones as well as their wheels. I'm glad to say that the boys are happily exploring and have already started to deconstruct the straw house so they can incorporate the straw into their new mound.
Thanks
Daisy.
