Is it true if you put a container of sand in the tank they will use it for a bathroom? We have 2 baby females and thought this would save on bedding if you only had to change the sand more often.

yes, gerbils will tend to use sand for a bathroom, however this doesn't mean they won't go elsewhere in the tank. You can also put a peanut butter sized glass jar on its side on the tank, and they will usually use that as well. Plan to clean the sand and/or jar at least twice a week. It may help extend the time between bedding changes a week at most; it's worth a try.

I find my gerbils do pee more in the sand areas so always worth having them in there

My gerbils used their sand bath dish after they've rolled/bathed in it! I have mine with a jar though they pee and poop in it, rather easy to clean up and reduced how much I had to clean. They don't always use it but 90% of the time, of mines use it exclusively.
They use it more for poop though. maybe I notice that since they don't pee much XD
