Hi Im from Denmark, so i apoligize if my english isn´t so good, but I hope you understand the meaning of what im writing. We don´t have a specific gerbil forum in my country and Im very interested in these little creatures so thats why I joined this forum. Im curios about the age of gerbils, how old do they get? And is female groups or male groups the easiest the start with, when you have never had gerbils before? I have a little hamster girl right now and I love her very much, but im concidering getting a gerbil family in the future.

I think on average they live to be about 3 years old. Males and females are both pretty similar. I've found my males a little easier to tame than my girls were, but that's just my personal experience. I've only had 3 males and had all of my females when I was a child so I didn't really know what I was doing. Males are also supposed to be a little less likely to fight, especially in larger groups, and easier to introduce to each other. But I think if you just want a pair either sex would be fine, I'd just suggest getting ones that already live together so you don't have to go through the process of introducing them.

thanks for your answer.
I also plan on finding a group that is alredy living together, I think that will also be the best way for me to start when I don't have any exsperience.
Althought i would like to have a group of 3 gerbils, do you think thats a bad idea?

A group of three isn't bad- I currently have three males living together. A lot of people don't suggest it, but I personally think it is fine, with males or females. There may be a slightly greater chance of them declanning (fighting/no longer getting along) but if you want to try three than I would say go for it.

I have three males together. I've only had them for a little over a year but so far they are doing great. Just be sure they have a big enough habitat.

Hi, I have two girls living together at the minute. Gerbils are sociable animals and like to live in pairs or groups. Before I got my gerbils I researched if girls or boys were better together and I said girls but only slightly. Males tend to bicker a bit more (Bicker means arguing). Males are Ok living together though so don't let me put you off getting boys. I personally think you should start off with girls but it's up to you. Males are fine. A Gerbils life span is 2-3 years old the same as hamsters so they live a long life Make sure your gerbils have plenty of space in their tank/cage. Because sometimes they can bicker over the lack of space Hope I helped PetMad15
