Are there any fruits or vegetables that I shouldn't give my gerbil? I've been giving Ralph a little bit of lettuce, celery and carrots lately. But what about things like apples or grapes, are those ok? And how much/often should I give him produce? Should they be treats or could they be incorporated into Ralph's diet?
Thank you in advance!

The biggest potential problem with fresh fruit and vegetable treats is their high water content. Gerbils are desert animals and too much water in their diet can result in diarrhea. The fruits and veggies you mention are fine so long as you don't offer too much too often. I give my gerbils a piece just big enough for them to hold comfortably in both paws - once or twice a day. I wouldn't make fresh produce part of the standard diet - consider them treats. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Eowyn (F) 11/12/2011 - 20 gallon with 20 gallon topper Goldberry (F) 11/12/2011 - 20 gallon with 20 gallon topper -------------------------------------------------------------- RIP Maire 11/6/2008 - 4/6/2011; Eithne 11/6/2008 - 10/10/2011 Lori 5/2/2011 - 7/24/2013; Mo 5/2/2011 - 1/14/2014; Carly 5/2/2011 - 5/21/2014 Arwen 11/12/2011 - 2/8/2015

they have an extensive list of okay food items on egerbil.com
Have fun with trying them out on new foods. It is interesting to see each gerbils personal preference for certain foods.
