Hello, My little fella waffle has been poorly for a week now. I noticed he was breathing heavily one evening and took him straight to vets for pets. They have given him injections of baytril And a course of antibiotics. We are a week in and the poor little might is still breathing heavily and I can hear clicking when he is breathing. I am not seeing as much improvement as I was hoping for in a week, Infact tje only thing I have really noticed is he is getting more energy and cunning towards escaping his antibiotics shots ( little rascal) Can anyone tell me if this is a good thing or should I be seeing a bonny bouncing gerbil again by now. Any one know how long recovery can take for a gerbil with a respiratory infection. Also has anyone had a second week of antibiotics for wee gibley? Any info would be great as can't seem to find and info on recovery process and estimated time for a gerbil with a ri on good old Google.

Could the clicking be their back teeth?
Randomly we've had them chatter their teeth, you can normally see their mouth move slightly as they do it. Never figured out the meaning as their mood is no different to any other time.

I thought it was Alabeano that was ill, and Waffle was taking care of him?

Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your little friend. Listen closely to his breathing breathing, can you hear a faint wheezing with the clicking? my little gerbil had this and I'm so sorry to say he died only this morning. I tried everything I could to save him and in the end he choked on his medicine. I Will never forgive myself for this and if he is not better by now it may be best to speak with your vet and if they recommend he is suffering and unlikely to get better it is probably the kindest thing to have him put to sleep. I would not wish for anyone else to witness their little gerbil choking as it is simply awful. they seem to get to a point that their so short of breath they simply can't swallow tje medicine. My thoughts are with you.

Alabeano/Waffle, I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt here, but be aware that as a former mod I can see everyone's IP address. And the same IP address posted a thread about sick Alabeano with his healthy cagemate Waffle, and a thread about sick Waffle. Both of which received antibiotic injections, which are not standard practice for treating gerbils.
