I have one gerbil and am going to get him a buddy soon. What do I do until then? And what is the best way to introduce gerbils to each other without using the split cage method?

There are a lot of people trying to introduce gerbils without the split - it is usually fine with really young pups, but not sure on the results of the older mixes? Someone is sure to reply with advice.
Just out of interest - why don't you want to follow the Split Method?

I definitely wouldn't suggest it- I have done introductions without using a split and its just not a good idea. (The exception being young pups, as Betty said)

It's a really bad idea not to do the split cage method. One of the gerbils could end up dead or seriously injured. With the split cage method, you will get an idea of how the gerbils are getting along before they can hurt each other.

My cages are the KayTee crittertrail, do you know of any other small animals that would fit in that kind of cage besides hamsters?
i am not a huge fan if hamsters because they are mostly nocturnal.

Crittertrails are much too small for hamsters, gerbils, or really anything. So no, no small animals would fit in a CT. However, they make great travel cages, and you can use them to place the animals in while you clean their cage, or you can add them onto the habitat for some extra play room.

We don't do the split cage method because we want to or because we have the right cage, we do it because it works and doesn't allow for either gerbil to get hurt during the introductions.
If you don't have the facilities to do a safe introduction, then perhaps you should wait until you do. I'm sure your current gerbil would rather be alone for a while than down the vets getting painkillers and anti biotics administered. Gerbil fights can be pretty nasty.

Gerbil fights are often to the death for total strangers, a bit more than nasty.

You can find cheap tanks on Craigslist (or similar sites). They can be especially cheap if they can't hold water which would be fine for your purposes. For example I just looked on my local craigslist for 20 gallon tanks and the first post is someone selling two 20 gallons with screen lids for $15 each.

If it is not big enough where can I find a 20 gallon tank under 30 dollars? They do not have any at amazon or at any of my local pet stores. Can ahn one help me? plus I do not earn very much Mony per week and I need to get one soon so it has to be under thirty dollars in order for my to hey it in time. An ideas?

That doesnt have enough bedding depth, and I can't speak to its size (But it looks kinda small). Do you have a petco? Starting sunday they will be selling 20 gallons for $20.
