When I clean my gerbil's aquarium, I often try to set it up in a way that looks nice and that I think the gerbils will like. But, no matter what I do, the gerbils rearrange it to their actually likely, which can differ from time to time. I have no idea what they are thinking as they happily disassemble things, move things and make piles of bedding in all the "wrong" places. But, anyway I figure it's their home so they should do as they wish. In short, do whatever theme you want, but don't expect the gerbils to respect your design.

(Sorry-I know Hopping Hammy and I am totally in love with Gingersnap) Hamsters are pretty good at messing up their cage-they are nothing compared to gerbils though. A basic theme would to go with all one color-Example, green, and have green colored toys and bedding. Another theme could be natural-going with lots of wood + hay + uncolored cardboard, as well as brown paper bedding, or aspen.
Natural would be great for gerbils-no matter how much of a mess they make out of it, it will still retain that calm, ethereal vibe.

I'd have to say that natural has been what I've been going with with my lone Gerbil. She get's a lot of cardboard, willow sticks, wooden hideaways and bridges along with other bits and bobs that seem to work well. I do admit, the "theme" itself with everything in it's place can last for about 5 minutes tops before she chews and/or moves everything. But it's nice to have her enjoying herself since that's the main point in the setup for me.
