The pineapple and banana chips have no added sugar and I break them up into small pieces so they only get a little bit every day.

How do people weigh their gerbils, if they actually do? I guess the best way to do it would be put them in a bowl on a set of scales but I am sure they wouldn't stay in there long enough to actually get a proper reading.

Yes, that's exactly it.
They do actually sit still for an accurate reading after a bit of faffing around. Sometimes I can put a raisin on the scale and just put them right infront of it, and the second or two it takes them to sniff it is all I need.

Those gerbils don't look healthy. We've had a few that were noticeably bigger than other, but they were in normal gerbil proportions when you see them standing. Both those gerbils are overweight, Titan (mottled black) was 3 years old in the picture. The easiest way to assess if they are overweight is when they are on four legs. You can see how thick their should pads are, and how low their belly hangs, and if their front legs disappear into their fur. When they stand up its harder to visualize their extra fat.
