Hi, I am in search of a slightly larger wheel for my gerbils, I have the 6.5 silent spinner and they seem to run on it just fine. Top speed in fact. They don't seem to have to bend their backs much to run on it, but they're still young and I am not sure how old a gerbil is when it's full grown.
Anyways, since the silent spinners, to my great disappointment, don't sell a size midway between 6.5 and 12 inches, I can't just get another of those.
Are there any wheels that you could recommend that are a good size, I had a comfort wheel once, and it was the nosiest wheel I ever had. And I don't like the mesh ones because I don't like that they have the bars that go across the wheel so one of my gerbils could hit her head on the cross bars or something.
Could the 6.5 inch be okay, they seem to run perfectly fine on it? I'm just worried that it might not be the best for them.
Thanks!

My gerbils have the 6.5" silent spinner too. I know your struggle I really want to get them an 8" just for more space and comfort if that makes sense so I really want to get them an 8" for more room but I can't find one. Like you, I don't want to get them a mesh wheel or a non silent wheel because I don't like them sort of wheels. I have known accidents happen with the mesh ones and the non silent ones just will not be ideal for me as the gerbils are in my bedroom. My gerbils are 1 year and 7 months old and they still have the 6.5" and they seem Okay in it. They haven't developed any back trouble or anything, most people do give their gerbils 6.5" so your perfectly Okai. If I come across one I will get the 8" silent spinner but at the moment they seem perfectly fine in the 6.5". Hope I helped PetMad15

I have an 8" mesh wheel for my gerbils and it seems to work pretty well. I'm not sure what you mean by crossbars though. mine is like this, only blue. you can use the stand it comes with or attach it to the side of a topper directly. you have to keep it oiled, and when Jean Luc ran on it it sort of rattled the whole topper, but he loved it.

Well most metal wheels have the crossbars, the one that you pictures obviously doesn't, but the only ones I could find that were like that didn't get good reviews. What brand is your wheel by the way? I might end up just sticking with my silent spinner, but it would be nice to have other options

I have an 8" Wheel y Fit wheel. I bought it as I had a 6.5" silent spinner, but I thought it was slightly on the small size for my gerbil (Richard). It is a mesh wheel, but the mesh is small enough so that Richard doesn't have any trouble running on it, his feet can't slip through or anything.
I would say, stick to the 6.5 until your gerbils grow. If it is big enough for them for the time being, you could make more research on wheels, and maybe by the time you need to buy a new one, there finally will be 8" silent spinner (probably wishful thinking but oh well).

I was going to mention the wodent wheel since that's just another style you haven't looked at yet. However, you still may have the same issues you're worried about with a mesh wheel crossbar. If someone tries to get on while the other is running they may get clocked in the head.

I refuse to use any wheel with holes in, like the metal ones listed above, or even mesh floors, might never happen but I'd heard too many stories about toes getting stuck in them and broken. Then to make things worse, some gerbils will try to 'remove' the pain by chewing off the broken toes, but obviously any open wound is painful so they sort of keep going... It might be a rare thing, but I won't risk my pets lives. This is for all my animals too, not just gerbils.
The wodent wheel junior is 20cm so just less than 8", while the senior is 28cm so pretty much 11".
I never used to have a wheel in the cage, mine kept themselves busy with digging, climbing, chewing and each other but now I just have Fudge I'm trying to make a way to fit a wheel in. While she's out she uses a 12" Silent spinner and a 12" flying saucer.

Yeah, if I manage to create a cage topper for them then I might get the 12 inch silent spinner or something. Because I really am a fan of the silent spinner. How do the flying saucers work for you? Do they cause your gerbils to run funky (I don't know it just looks like a strange mechanism for a wheel and I was wondering if it made it so they had to curve their backs or something while running), and do you know what sizes they are? Its actually rather unfortunate, because I found the perfect wheel for my hamster, it's a California storm wheel for hedgehogs (It's the most silent wheel ever! and runs so smoothly and is super easy to clean!), but, unfortunately it's made out of plastic, and soft plastic at that, and would most certainly get chewed :/ Yeah, woodent wheels I've thought of, they do still have the problem of gerbils possibly hitting their heads if they try to get on while it's moving, but mostly it's because It would be really annoying to clean, and also I wouldn't be able to watch them on the wheel as much (I know I'm greedy that way ).
