If you are going full on for the split now then they need to have no physical nest/house in their half of the split and minimal toys and tubes etc. You swap them first thing, again in the afternoon and then just before your bedtime.
That way they get to sleep in the other ones bed overnight each night and it increases the rate at which they accept the others scent - basically like leaving the purfume in the place. If you go straight in a room after someone has left you can smell them - but if you go in there the next day you can't. By swapping frequently - they should still be able to smell themselves in each half and so scent mark less and as they can also still smell the other gerbil - they start to believe they both live there.
That way - when you take the split divide out (when they are ready of course) they both think they live on both sides and so don't feel threatened by each other.
