we purchased 4 male gerbils from pets at home about 6 weeks ago, we left 2 males in the shop, we called in yesterday and there is 1 male left. I feel so sorry for it, sat there on its own. Is it too late to buy it or would they not remember each other now and maybe attack it?

Gerbils will forget eachother after 48 hours.

I would think it unlikely they would accept him back seeing as they are quite a big clan, and all of them would have to agree on the new guy. But that doesn't mean it is impossible.
Many people on here have managed to split groups together, and they are still so young. What could happen though is your existing 4 splitting up as a result, which nobody wants.
The easiest thing to do if you really want the single one would be to take one from your four and put them together, leaving 3 together and you with 2 tanks.

Thank you for the advice, it's such a shame, I don't really want to split these 4 up as they do get along together nicely, plus my hubby would have a fit if I said I wanted to set up another cage. I just hope whoever buys the lone male can put him with another and it works out for them.

Males are easier to get along in most cases, and it may work, but if it doesn't then it is only you who will feel bad.
Mind you, if you already feel bad about the lone one, you are no worse off either way?
And what size and shape is your current tank, as it may not suit 5 grown males anyway?

WOW.
That is plenty big enough while they are getting on - and perfect if you ever have to split them up as they age for any reason - just cover the downstairs ladder - and you have 2 perfect tanks too.
Nice.

Thank you, we love it, I tend to watch the gerbils on a night now rather than the TV. I hope we never have to split them up as the bottom half is their burrowing cage and the top is more for eating and bathing. This is their cage at the moment flic.kr/p/rkbvnY
