I will be picking up two 6 week old male pups tomorrow, and I was planning on doing the split cage method with my current adult male gerbil, Monty.
My plan was to use the plastic aquarium divider, and well..that has been a huge pain. The plastic was rolled up in the box, so it is near impossible to get it to straighten out, even with the plastic attachments. Right now I have it rolled out on the table with a couple of phone books and a 15 pound weight on it to see if I can straighten it out.
If I can't get it to work, is an introduction on neutral ground a possibility?
Did I read correctly that since the pups are so young, I could try an introduction on neutral ground, and skip the split cage?

If you are getting them from an experienced breeder, then sometimes they can do a split on your behalf. I know a few that can match up older ones to pups in just an hour or so, or if not, they will keep them overnight to be sure.
If you are getting then from a store, then they may have been taken early enough from their mum that they are still looking for an adult companion to rely on and so may well go together on neutral ground as long as the adult is the laid back type.
Have a pot ready when you try them the first time, and preferably a friend with a pot too, and also a spare secure cage incase it doesn't happen straight away.
Good luck either way.

I was able to get some hardware cloth, and do the split cage with that. Although, I'm very concerned about Monty's reaction. He would smell noses a little with the pups, but often he would lunge at the partition. Is this a really bad sign?

Can you tell the difference between aggressive lunging and eagerness? Monty has always been sort of high energy. But it concerns me that he usually lunges at the pup after they have smelled noses for a few minutes. Both of the pups just want to smell him...not a single bit of aggression from either of them.
