Perhaps he needs to see a vet then if you are still worried. Try offering vegs in the mean time and possibly some liquid food to get fluids into him a different way to see if that helps short term.
Licking glass happens sometimes even when they have clean water to drink, as long as it's not all the time? And living you could be for salt (from your sweat). If his body salts are wrong, then this will make him thirsty. Does he have a mineral stone?

He is not licking the tank all the time and I might get him a mineral stone. I don't think he needs to go to the vet yet and my parents won't let me take my gerbils to the vet because it is so expensive and they only live a short time. I think I will get him a mineral stone next week.

Has he currently got a dust bath in his tank, as he might eat some of that in the mean time if he needs it...
Vets can vary in price, I've got one near Me who is only £10 for a check up. I use him a lot. Other vets can charge up to £30 for a basic consult. Shocking.

Regardless of how long they live he should still go to a vet if he needs to. Not saying that he needs to go now but there are many ailments that can affect them that can be treated with medication or an operation. Depending on where you live depriving an animal from having the necessary veterinary care is actually against the law and can come with a hefty fine. I'm sorry if I sound overly harsh but I very much believe that if someone can't afford vet bills or won't take an animal to the vet then they shouldn't have them in the first place. I can understand that circumstances change and that's when difficulties arise but getting any living being with the thought that if they get ill you won't be taking it to the vet is just wrong.

I would take him to the vet for a checkup if he seems really sick but no operations if he gets a tumor or something like that. But I don't think we will need a trip to the vet any time soon because he is really healthy other than the weird licking.
