So my gerbils scent gland tumour has grown back. About 2 months ago, he had one about the same size, he got fairly ill, i had him booked to get an operation but he bit it off himself, left a very clean cut that healed, now its grown back and its bleeding a fair amount.
He's been sitting quietly in cage, sleeping, eating, drinking a lot more than usual but his eyes have been half shut and he looks like he's in pain..
I have a vets app for money to have him euthanised.
Questions, should i leave it longer? I will not get him operated on because i simply don't have the money and the chances are that it will yet again grow back and he will yet again suffer. I was hoping, as it was growing, that he would nibble it off again but he hasn't
He is about 2 & 1/2 years old. His cage mate has no tumour so far.
I love him so much but i can't stand to see him like this. What do you think?

see how he is tomorrow and Mon. before you take him in, if you are not sure, you can ask the vet what he thinks or if metacam may help him out-they only need a tiny drop and he could feel better. If he is doing things on his own and seems to have enough quality of life then he can wait abit but if he seems to be sleeping almost all the time and seems to be having pain, then you may need to consider him PTS. Take care, it is a hard decision but only you can make that choice (with input from a vet and others). I've had pets pts, it is hard but the right one to make if they are suffering too much to enjoy life.

Does metacam work quite well? I assume its a form of pain relief? I want to get him operated on but the tumour is pretty big and i really don't have the funds, they were quoting me £70 last time, nevermind extra costs of boarding them there, initial apps and aftercare and its such a risk and stressful for them both. I will ask the vet about that drug, see if she can perhaps help me out in another way but if he's going to continue to be in pain i'll have to get him put down, it's not fair...poor thing.

I've used metacam in various animals including rodents, it can work wonders to control pain. It won't do anything to shrink the tumor or stopping it growing more but if it's the pain that's causing his diminishing quality of life then it could just be the thing he needs.

When I booked my little one in for this SGT Op, I made the one appointment and that was that.
I turned up on the morning of the op - she had one consult to explain it all to me, took him and his tankmate off and I collected them later that same day. No after visits needed as it all healed well. He was given some pain relief for 7 days by me at home, and that was that.
They aren't like dogs and cats where treatment can go one for ages - mine was a one stop shop. And £70 is cheap if that is all in?
I do also have a vet around the corner that I don't like for treatments, but they do a consult for less than £10 so if I think something is wrong or want to know if surgery could work, I go to them first for the initial heads up.
