yesterday I noticed that one of my gerbils was scratching his ear alot, and today I just noticed that he had a scab under his ear and I think maybe a small amount of hair loss in the same area, also theres a small amount of yellow just under his year (possibly ear wax or something else) could this be an ear infection? or blocked ear? or something else?
Edit: I have now noticed than he is often squinting the eye next to the ear and the ear is also being held lower than the other, he is also sometimes shaking his head before scratching it.

Sounds like it might be uncomfortable whatever it is, so perhaps a trip to the vets for some pain relief might be in order.

yeah I'm thinking a trip to the vets. I'm not sure if there open tomorrow though as its a bank holiday but might have to phone up tomorrow to find out but if not then will have to wait till Tuesday :/
I was also thinking, I have a small amount of antibiotics left from when one of my gerbils had a urinery track infection 2 months ago and if we can't get him to the vets tomorrow do you think it would be worth giving him some? and if so would it still be in date?

I just got back from the vets and he has been diagnosed with a probable ear infection, and he ear canal has completely closed up. He has been prescribed 0.06ml of baytril antibiotics 2 times a day for 10 days and 0.4ml of metacam for cats painkiller and inflammatory once a day, but I have a question about this as 0.4ml seems alot for a little gerbil so dose this sound right or has anyone else been prescribed this for there gerbils and how much was there dose.

that is good you took him to the vets- I'm not sure of the dose of metacam but it was a tiny amt., like a very small drop so it could be .04ml and not .4ml but maybe you should call your vets to be sure. If he doesn't seem in pain, you could wait and see if he needs it or not and just try the baytril until you can talk to your vet or get a accurate dose. I hope he gets better soon.
take care,
Tammy

A puppy at my work was prescribed metacam for a torn ACL and she got about .4 ml for 20 lbs of dog... I"m thinking you were prescribed .04 ml. If it's cat metacam then I feel a drop should probably do it for a gerbil, but I'm not a vet. Metacam is a great pain killer so if he needs it be sue he gets some!
Baytril saved red's life. It's good stuff. If you've never used it before, my vet says it has to be refrigerated but Red liked it better room temperature, so maybe wait til it warms up to give it to your peanut. <3

Check your syringe - you may have a small syringe that is already .04 rather than .4
I would check with the vets before changing his medication rather than just assuming they gave you the wrong amounts. If they didn't give you the wrong amounts then they gave you the RIGHT amounts and you shouldn't change it; however, if they did actually give you the wrong amounts then you need to tell them so they don't make that mistake again with another animal - and I would hope they would apologise to you and refund you some money (as they would have given you far more medication than you need at an extra cost).
