Recently one of my gerbils (Holly) has been acting weird and not taking her food like she normally does. So we checked on her and her sister to find that Holly was really teary and not as active I took her to the vet because her eyes were crusted. Well he said that everything seemed fine but her breathing was labored. And since her nose wasn't crusted he wasn't to worried but he gave us medicine anyway. He suggested we get a heat lamp too because the ac having to be on. So we got that and a new dust bath bowl. She seems to be enjoying it but I'm really worried because her breathing looks like it got worse and she's still pretty sleepy.

How is she doing today? If she has an infection, she should have responded to the antibiotic by now. Otherwise, maybe she has a bedding allergy? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Eowyn (F) 11/12/2011 - 20 gallon with 20 gallon topper Goldberry (F) 11/12/2011 - 20 gallon with 20 gallon topper -------------------------------------------------------------- RIP Maire 11/6/2008 - 4/6/2011; Eithne 11/6/2008 - 10/10/2011 Lori 5/2/2011 - 7/24/2013; Mo 5/2/2011 - 1/14/2014; Carly 5/2/2011 - 5/21/2014 Arwen 11/12/2011 - 2/8/2015

She is much better now, but I think the medicine is making her bloated cause she is much larger than she was. That or its the dried banana treat though if it was the treat it's not affecting her sister Hilly.

Sometimes sick gerbils puff out their coats to stay warm. She has the heat lamp and her sister to keep warm - maybe provide some shredded toilet paper for a warmer nest.

Thanks I'll continue to keep an eye on them and put some toilet paper in.

Did the toilet paper help? Ours liked to stack and arrange it as a cozy, warm hiding place, and soft bed.

She grew in size again and can barely move around, I don't think we can afford a visit to the vet and it's very worrying.

sorry to hear Holly isn't doing too well, she looks like she has a tumour like my Zena did, I had her put down 1 1/2 weeks ago as she wasn't doing well at all. Do call around and see if any vets may be cheaper, say she is suffering and maybe they will be kind and not charge you too much.
Take care,
Tammy

Well we took her in and they decided its best to put her down because she was going through conjestive heart failure and might of had a tumor. They charged only 10 for the mri and 30 for her to be euthinized .
