I noticed yesterday that Daisy was acting very ill. I searched it up and she fitted all the aspects of a stroke. she is 2 years and 7 months. She was very lethargic, she couldn't walk property. Her bad legs were not moving how they should and she kept rolling over, she also couldn't get comfortable and kept going to her leg to 'clean it' but i think this was just her way of trying to get her legs to work. She settled down after an hour and managed to get to sleep and relax. She is perfectly fine now and when i researched it it said that they can come on very suddenly which it did, they can lose the use of some limbs which the did and they are lethargic and its common in elderly gerbils, so im certain it was a stroke. The reason i ask is because i am going to make a video on youtube about strokes in gerbils but i don't want to use footage of Daisy or say about what Daisy did if it wasn't a stroke she had Thankyou everyone ^-^ x

Sorry, I don't know much about strokes, but if you upload the video - maybe someone can see if it looked like a stoke at all - and even if it wasn't a stroke - you could still use the video to show what looks like it but isn't?
Is she still fine?

Is there any way to put video on here through the forum? thats a good idea thanks!! Yeah, she is doing well Still being quite sleepy but today she has been up and about, making tunnels and all. Only concern is water but i think she is getting enough. Been feeding her a little bit of cucumber, porridge, bringing the bottle to her just to make sure she gets enough Thanks again

You can put a link to a youtube of FB video on here using the behind the scenes editor. Give that a try - find the forum notes set up on here to help you do it.... I found this one - gerbilforum.proboards.com/thread/17637/post-videos - there might be more on here - take a look.

Interesting. If you hadn't told me she had got better - I would have firstly assumed that she had damaged a leg or her spine as her back shape was 'different' and she looked really alert still; but when you watched the whole video, she did look a bit confused actually.
If it was just an injury, she would have tried to move anyway - but your poor little mite seemed to not be sure where to go or what to do - even though she could turn around and sort of move her limbs. The fact that it has gone away could indicate a neurological problem such as a stroke, but I am not 100% on gerbil strokes - as obviously humans who have a stroke don't actually recover the use of their limbs without speedy treatment.
Perhaps now you have attached the video, we will get comments from people who have actually had a diagnosed gerbil stroke themselves and can compare this - and let us know if gerbils can regain full movement after an actual stroke? If not, then you will know that your video footage is something else.

Never seen anything like that. When ours have had little fits in the past, their whole body goes limp. She seemed quite alert in the video. I would have been preparing for the worst and a trip to the vets, amazed she got better.

Thats what i assumed at first, that she had fallen and injured her leg of spine. Yeah, when she had calmed down, another sign that suggested a stroke was that half her face seemed droopy but that could have been due to just being tired from her ordeal? Bless her, she did seem very confused, trying to settle down but would jolt and walking round again not knowing what to do </3 hmm yeah, i didn't know all that much on strokes until i searched it up, ill leave a link to the website i read it on She was quite tired and lethargic for the next couple days after that, but with not leg issues or walking problems, then yesterday she was up and digging her tunnel, as if there was no problem. Yeah, good point! Yeah, i hope so If it isn't a stroke then im very curious as to what it is? Thankyou so much Betty, that was super helpful, thanks Heres the link to them website: www.twinsqueaks.com/care/old.htmlwww.shawsheenrivergerbils.com/elders.htmlMe either, it was very sudden and not expected at all. It may have just been a mild stroke because she could still walk and it was full paralysis? Yeaah, she was indeed I really wanted to take her to the vet because i was panicking, but my mum said that vets wouldn't be able to do anything and that it would stress her more I couldn't do anything to change her mind but i guess that was just the way it was and Daisy got better nevertheless Haha yeaah! i was preparing to lose her by morning but i couldn't have been more happy to see her little head pop out from her nest :') thankyou vexorg!! xx

Glad Daisy is doing better, it does sound like a stroke as it can make them lethargic for acouple days after, but I haven't had a gerbil with a stroke. Maybe it was good you didn't take her to a vet, he/she may have said to put her to sleep as they may not have known about gerbil strokes.

Thankyou so much Yeah, seem likely. Thanks, i felt bad that i couldn't take her to the vet. When i asked around like what was happening to Daisy, someone said that as she was struggling and i wasn't taking her to the vet that it was a form of animal abuse that i was doing :/ thanks again Tammy
