Does anyone have any comparison photos of the two? They are so similar I can't tell the difference, and Im wondering if my two black gerbils are slate or black. Ill put pictures of them when I get on my computer.

I thought our pups were black/spotted black (see Obi Wan in my avatar pic) but when I compare them to the pic o a black pup below taken from the internet, the black in ours isn't as 'deep' & their coats aren't as long so I'm wondering whether ours are slate?

T1gg3er, your pup still looks black to me. If you go to the Prairie Clan website, there's a picture of a slate pup under colors and it looks lighter than yours. And for a comparison between the two, I found this.

Thanks for the comparison! I think my oldest gerbil is a spotted slate, and my youngest one is just a mottled black.

It's not easy when you have just one on it's own - but I have noticed in many images that the tail looks a different colour to the body in Slates (at the join mark) whereas the Blacks it tends to stay the same colour with no clear de-markation?
That might not be the case for all of them - but is is noticeable in the image above by crittercrazy. I will have to look at more of images - otherwise it is down to the paler toenails on the rear feet of the Slates, but again a comparison gerbil is always handy...
Also, the spotted gene can 'dull' the effect of Black sometimes and make them not as stunning as usual. Not always though - I have some GORGEOUS Spotted Blacks.

Ah - posted at the same time - so you can't use the toenails as yours are both spotted!

Take a picture of the gerbil's head from the side with flash. The eyes on a Slate well glow red in the middle in bright light (like a camera flash). I've seen Blacks that could pass for Slate, and vice versa, except for the eyes.

We've had black gerbils before, and they were jet black. I'd say our current black one is slate, definitely a lightness to his coat.

So it is all in the eyes - great to know!
We never need worry about shades of black again...

Really? My slate never had red eyes in pictures with flash.

Really? My slate never had red eyes in pictures with flash. What were the parents of your Slate - perhaps it was a pale Black after all? It would certainly be weird if that 'eye rule' had any exceptions - unless it was linked to recessive genes hiding underneath? Hmm?

Both parents where from long lines of blacks... so maybe a pale black? She did have a longer coat though.

Probably just a washed-out Black. This is a Black next to a Slate-- if I remember right, they both carried colorpoint, which will definitely dull the color some.
