Hiya!
I have two gerbils which both chew a lot and I was wondering if anyone could suggest good chew toys or things like that which I could get for them?
Thank you,
Luli x

The wooden house/fort or play logs work well, they last a while. In the inside cardboard of packing roll tape last a reasonable length of time. Anything thin like cereal box or toilet roll tube last less than a day.

I think it really depends on whether you live in the UK, or somewhere else (as I only know what toys are available in the UK). But generally my boys like to chew wooden things that have holes in them (they love to make the holes bigger), and cardboard is their absolute favourite but doesn't last more than a minute.

I have been giving my two small bamboo baskets to chew on. They LOVE them, however, they only last a day. Toilet paper and paper towel rolls are another favorite, but, again those barely last 1/2 a day. It's pretty much a daily routine replacing their chew items.
I do have a nice size flat rock that's rather course that I have in their topper that they love to romp or chew on.

I agree that wooden things with holes in or bendy tunnels pushed against a cage side to annoy them - then they want to chew it to make it bigger.
Anything wooden, coconut shelled or corn-based are fine - especially if they can crawl through it - just get value for money as you want them for their chew-a-bility - not their long term lifespan. Plain wood is better rather than overly decorated or painted things cost-wise too - and you won't be too upset either if they chew a plain wooden cube rather than eat their pretty strawberry-shaped house to pieces!
Make sure you still give them toilet rolls and other 'easy' cardboard too - as this is their favourite...

Mine get cardboard of varying types which can be destroyed within the day, but occasionally lasts longer especially if it's a larger box or thicker cardboard. Egg boxes seem to last forever with my boys! I've found that while they will chew wood, they prefer other things. You can get wicker balls which will go quickly but are very popular. I got a large one meant for rabbits a while ago and that lasted about a week. I've just today put in a bundle of wicker twigs and so far they love it, but I can't comment yet on how long it'll last. I recently gave them a couple of loofah toys, a simple piece of it and a ball of pressed loofah. The piece lasted a few days and they really liked it. The ball is still kicking around a week later as they don't like it so much! Assuming you're in the UK, this shop has a great selection: www.petscorner.co.uk/small-animal/toysAs does this one: www.acoombs.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=18_893

And if you live in the UK, you can go to The Range and get their small chew tubes for 49p, similar ones cost 2 pounds in Pets At Home. With my boys those chew tubes usually last a couple weeks or more (as they do get plenty of cardboard and other chews daily).

Mine have some branches, bamboo, toilet roll tubes, loofah chew and an egg box, they seem to like chewing the branches, bamboo and timothy hay the best. I also got them a little wooden strawberry shaped chew, one of those flavoured ones from a pet shop, it disappeared into a tunnel and was never seen again!

I've just thought of a way to get rid of all the bamboo chopsticks we get... The gerbils are thrilled, but I'm wondering why it took me so long...

If you live in the UK, like Blanknote said, the range does cheap thick cardboard rolls for 50p which compared to pets at home or zoo plus or whatever is really cheap. They are from the proper brand and is not Cheap or the false brand. If you are from the UK also, Pets at Home and other pet stores sell the 'Hide and Seek Cube' which is a great toy and chew toy. It lasts forever! I have had my gerbils for around 3 years in November and they have had the cube for pretty much the whole time I have had them and it is still standing (rare for my gerbils) they do chew it but because it's so thick it lasts ages. My gerbils are big chewers so I struggle to find things that actually last but for the price I paid (£3.50) It is an amazing product. As I said before I have had my gerbils for coming up 3 years and they still haven't got through it yet. So all in All I reccomend this item. Also Bendy bridges are good as well and so many people have them. If you haven't got any bendy bridges I definatly reccomend getting some because there are endless possibilities with them. Hope I helped PetMad15

The pets at home log with the bark on the outside is another that lasts for months. Our spend as much time throwing th logs around the cages as chewing them. The love the bark on them too.

Can you give a link to the item you mean, vexorg? The description doesn't ring a bell to me, and I do browse in P@H quite often.

I recently added some dried bamboo to our new gerbils home. its about 20-30mm in diameter (about an inch) and they're happily chewing at it but it seems to be holding up very well (only been in the tank about 3-4 days so far though).
