Ok so I finally hit the 2 weeks minium for split caging and they would sleep in each other nests and nose kiss a lot . So today I put them together (these are my first gerbils) I had a paper plate and garden gloves on incase anything went wrong, there was a lot of sniffing but then my dominant one walked up and put his mouth on my submissive gerbils neck at the time I thought he was biting him and quickly separated them but there where no bit marks or blood, but now that I think about it maybe he was trying to groom him or play I have never seen grooming or play fighting so I'm trying to be careful Am I just being paranoid or is that good?

Was he gripping the back of the neck when you saw him, or did he pin him upsidedown to bite his throat side of the neck?
Any other interactions before this or were they minding their own business up to then? Any scent marking or eating?

Both were sniffing around each other and then marble(dominant) kinda placed his chin on midnight(submissive) No biting happened as I seperated them when I saw this happen.

Sorry, totally missed you reply somehow.
Well, quite often mine rest their heads on each other, and if they were both standing upright, then it may have been a good sign - unlike chasing or pinning upside down...
Any more progress?
I am trying 2 girls at the moment - and mine are pinning each other down upside down! I will be trying again today after a lot more swapping over, otherwise that will be it for them - I will switch them out with others...
Anyway - here we go for the one last chance before it gets too late tonight for me to watch them.

Good luck Betty Nope. It just wasn't looking good and Boo - the older one - was not looking happy. Felicity - the younger one of the two - was a tricky customer before and it took me several attempts to find her a friend (Sister) - which we did successfully - but then she died! So after lots more pinning down and an early stage ball scuffle - Boo and Felicity are now separate again and waiting for a new friend to try them with - perhaps they need some older males? Anyway, I have Socrates and Freckle together in a split as well and this should go much easier as they are male and female. Freckle is 1.5 years old, so should be past the fertile stage and they can live happily ever after together as husband and wife... And yes, please let us know how it goes with your two as it it interesting to know how many splits work out and what combinations and ages they were - so we can watch out for general trends.

To me this sounds like he was going to groom Midnight. At least that's where my dominant one usually ends up grooming the submissive one (that is when I happen to see them grooming).

Yay. Socrates and Freckle are together! I could see she was having her second heat since going together, so took out the divide. Perfect.
I wish they were always this easy....
