I have two Golden Agouti gerbils, and there are pups on the way. So I've been wondering what colour the pups could be. Since they are both the same colour I wondered if the pups would be that colour too, but seeing as there are 3 colours in the agouti fur I figured there might be other colours in the litter. The female is slightly darker than the male, so that must mean there is more black in her I suppose. Does anyone have any experience with a pairing like this ?

We have a golden agouti boy & black spotted girl. Their 1st litter included 3 golden agouti boys, 2 with spots, one without. The level of 'gold' varies quite a lot between these boys. One is a lovely yellowish golden (no spots) whereas the 2 with spots are much darker. There was also one CP agouti. The second litter were 3 blacks (2 with spots) & another CP agouti.
I don't know anything about genetics/colours etc... but I'm guessing if your girl had a black parent there's a chance you may get black in the pups as well as agoutis?

The 3 colours in the Agouti fur are always together (as that is the banding in a wild agouti coat) - unfortunately this doesn't reflect the colour the pups might be.
The only colour you can guarantee from a 2 Agouti mating is more Agoutis!
That isn't to say you won't get any other colours - as 2 Agoutis (with the right hidden genes) could carry virtually ALL the other colours within their coding.
Most likely - if you get other colours - they will be Argente; then Black - and if you get Argente and Black - you could get Lilac.
All the other colours COULD happen - but unless you know the colours of your gerbils parents or their brothers and sisters you won't know what you have got until they pop out!
