We're going to be decorating a room next to the one some of our gerbils are in. There is a wall between the 2 rooms but no door - just an archway that's about the width of a standard doorway. The decorating will involve using wallpaper paste, emulsion & gloss paint. Will the gerbils be ok with this if we keep the windows open for ventilation? We can hand a dust sheet over the archway but it's used constantly for access to the kitchen so it's inevitable some fumes will pass through.

Always difficult with off-gassing - even for humans!
I'm sure if you keep it well ventilated like you said and you aren't getting too overwhelmed by the smell they should be ok - and remember the build up of the smell after you go to bed and close all the windows and doors etc - so stop much earlier than you need to to give it time to clear afterwards.
If you are still worried, you could always move them to another room entirely, or ship them out to a friends house.

Unfortunately moving them isn't a option as there's a 4 foot tank & a 3 foot tank so not very portable. The room where the gerbils are is the breakfast room at the back of the house & then open plan into the kitchen which has a window that I could lock in a slightly open position for the night. Our spaniels would soon let us know if anyone was anywhere they shouldn't be outside. Hopefully a combination of that & a sheet hung at the archway from the living room will be enough to stop any fumes getting to them during the night? And that's a good idea to stop earlier & let it clear before we have to close the living room windows at bedtime - thanks!
