This is our first experience with gerbils and one is holding his head to one side and either laying on side still or rolling over and over what's wrong and what medicine can I use

it could have an ear infection and really needs to see a vet for antibiotics-do you know a vet near you who sees gerbils? it won't get better on its own and you can't get anything at the pet store that would help.

Yeah, this little guy needs to see a vet - and some antibiotics by the sound of it with that rolling over. Can he walk in a straight line at all?
Ear infections can be bad enough on their own causing the head tilt - but they can travel to the brain and make such neurological problems (unable to walk straight and rolling over) more permanent. There are other things it could be but this springs to mind first.
Do you have ANY vet closer to you that can take a look at him - if the small animal vet is too far away?

can the gerbil eat or drink? make sure he/she is. I do hope you can get her/him to a vet and hope he/she is doing better today.
