It's the time of year when HUGE spiders are coming into the house to mate. We seem to get more of the monsters due to having fields/woods at the end of the road. So far I've evicted 3 this week all around 6-8 cm long/wide & there's another now living rent free somewhere in our bedroom after hubby let it escape this morning. I've seen a news article saying they could be up to 12cm this year. And I'm terrified of them!
I've ordered myself a vacuum spider catcher that will suck them in & I can then take them down the road to release them so hopefully they'll go back into someone else's house instead of coming back here (not very neighbourly I know).
But I've also seen a plug-in sonic repellent thingy that's supposed to keep them out in the 1st place & says it's safe to use with pets. Would this include small furries though - just saying 'pets' seems quite a broad statement. Has anyone else used anything like this & were your gerbs ok with it?

Thanks for that. It looks different to the one I saw but would imagine it'd have the same effect so I'll steer clear & start rubbing lemons around all the little nooks & crannies instead. Still haven't found the beastie that escaped this morning. Probably sitting under a chest of drawers laughing at me.

That sounds terrible - an invasion of giant spiders?
I might consider sending the gerbils to a pet sitters for a week or two just so I could use the sonic spider thing? Eek!

Never mind the gerbils - I'd rather move out myself for a while! We get them every year at the end of summer. Hubby & my 11 yr old are fine with them, they'll pick them up & take them out. But my 2 big strapping adult sons shriek more like girls than I do & won't even go in the room! Here's the article: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34026269

The ultrasonic ones cannot be used when you have gerbils (or other rodents), but the electromagnetic part is safe for gerbils. We use some made by Pest Contro where the ultrasonic part can be switched off.

If you get one, let me know if it works. I'm terrified of spiders (had a nightmare about one the other night and woke up thinking it was real - had to scramble over hubby to get away from it and panic a bit lol).

We have three that we've used to cover our 2400 sqft house, and in 15 years have never had to have the house sprayed with chemical pest controls. We occasionally have problems with ants, but so do our neighbors who get their houses sprayed. We just use Terro for the ants. We also see some small spiders, but we tolerate them because they help keep out other bugs. However, the product you linked to is different than what we have and as with anything not all products work the same. So I don't know about that one specifically. It will also take some time for it to work. Don't plug it in and expect the bugs to disappear overnight. Good luck with the giant spiders! Ick, I don't mind tiny 0.5 cm ones much but 8 cm AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!
