Hi Everyone, Recently I have been to Wilkos and I went to the pet section, and I noticed a coconut hideaway and I was just double checking if coconut shells were safe for gerbils to chew on. I am aware on what I give them but I just thought a coconut hideaway might be something different for them. My gerbils are big chewers so I need to know if it's safe before I purchase it. So what is your opinions? I want to do what's best for them and I'm pretty sure that coconut shell is Okai for gerbils but just wanted to double check. Thank you and TIA, PetMad15

Yes they're fine. Not to mention they wouldn't be allowed to sell them for pets if they weren't safe.

Yeah, they're fine - I think they're actually hard for gerbils to destroy too. but not everything in pet stores is safe, so you're right to ask. I've heard of chew-toy house-things held together with metal staples and peoples' gerbils have hurt their mouths on the sharp metal.

Well metal staples are obvious but everything should just about be safe if its a pet store...

No fluffy a lot of the "good" treats actually have way to much suger and fat a lot of other stuff is made made for hwamsters who aren't as bad chewers and are just labeled "for hamsters, mice, rats and gerbils."

And nesting material, which is also not safe for them. When it comes to gerbils you can't trust the pet store on blind faith because they're in it for a profit, period. If you want to try something new and it's not something you know people use for gerbils, its always good to ask here.
