I have 2 male gerbils who are around the same age. One slightly younger and both male. I have been using the split cage for A month and a half. The first time they met they were fine. They slept and ate together but then the younger one tried to be dominant and they had a fight. No blood was drawn. I separated them and then a week and a half later (today) I introduced them again and again one tried to be dominant and there was a fight. Blood was drawn. Is there any hope for these 2 becoming friends? Should I keep them on their own forever?

I think the general rule is if blood has been drawn then they probably won't go together. No need to keep them on their own though. If they seem happy in the split then they could live in a permanent split. Or better still you could find other boys to introduce them to. We recently gave up on trying to get our 2 single boys together & introduced them to a pup each instead. Those intros were really easy - 3 days in a split & they both accepted the pups straight away & it's lovely seeing them snuggled up with a friend each.

I have separated them. I'm going to get 1 baby male pup and put him in a split with the one male gerbil who is the 'meaner' one. If he gets along with him ill get another pup for the friendlier one and if he doesn't ill put him in a split with the friendlier one

I tried to introduce a younger male to an older male who already had his female companion, and tt1gg3er warned me about this but I decided to try any way and she was right. the older male was very aggrresive with the teen younger male had both on neutral ground little Harry sqeaked and thumped and looked at me saying get him away from me. So I did just that I put little Harry back with his teen female Sally. Both of my two are already paired up with there female companions and I guess it's going to remain that way. I really wanted for all of them to get along and live together. You know I thought by having a male female pair together they would have pup's right away, until now they get along just fine but no pup's just yet, but I'm ready with a extra 10 gallon tank just in case.

Mosin - it can take a while with youngsters. We bought what were supposed to be 2 boys early January this year & never thought to double check their genders. They were around 8 weeks when we got them. Evidently Gizzy was actually a girl & they produced pups at the end of April so mum & dad will have been around 6 months old when the pups were born. We didn't have a clue how to look after them so that's when I joined this forum

Harry and Sally remained calm. I soon decided to place Howy and Dazy in the 20 gallon tank. and everyone lives peacefully. Dazy might be pregnant she seemed to gain a little weight her fur coat is really soft and shine's take's many nap's during the day she eat's a lot and she threw Howy out of there sleeping chambers. I'm not 100% sure of this but there are many tattletale sign's that she might be.

Sorry, I meant it can take a while for them to breed, not to put them all together. Definitely don't try to put them together again - it's likely to result in bloodshed & if they did all go together & Dazy is pregnant then another female in the tank would attack/kill the pups when they arrive. Different 'families' don't mix happily unfortunately tho it'd be lovely if they did. Good luck with Dazy - look forward to hearing about her pups when they eventually arrive

Thank's t1gg3er, Yes you are totally right, and they are much happier that way the two teen's Harry & Sally are very quiet and sweet friendly. I really would have liked for all of them to be together un fortunately that won't happen. So far I have an agouti, Dazy witch is white Sally who's yellow and Harry who is spoted yellow/white wish I had a lilac coloured one.
