Welcome,Hay is ok, I've been considering hay for my four Howy,Dazy,Harry,Sally. Look's like carefresh beeding I use Aspen and lot of cardboard and toilet paper rolls and tissue. Some gerbil's get bald spot's on there nose with carefresh bedding.Check them both Gobi should have a scrotum if he is a male. Also leave the cardboard on the surface or if it's a cardboared tube leave it sticking half way out of the bedding they will jump in and tunnel away.Put there toy's on the surface.

hi, i have 2 gerbils and i give them hay all the time, they really love it, they need the water bottle as soon as you can get it as in the desert gerbils get their water from the things they eat and so it should be there all the time, i love the names the food should be fine and gerbils are great scavengers so i recommend scattering the food on the surface.

Thank you both. Its Fitch bedding, as I find carefresh quite dusty. They're both boys, not sure how the rescue could've missed it! I bought a water bottle on my way to collect them so they'd have one as soon as they went in, was easy to bend the wire so it hangs down nicely from the top. I've scattered some food in They haven't stopped digging, running and jumping on everything! Very entertaining to watch, they're also very easily to handle

Yes gerbils are quite friendly, if you want to get them a tasty treat try them with mealworms, mine love them. Flame will eat them in hand.

Your cage looks really good. It may be an idea to mix in some woodshavings as well, as your bedding doesn't look like it will hold tunnels very well. Mixing different substrates usually helps with this.

liz47, glad you're here I started giving my Dazy cheddar cheese as a treat but only sometimes just so she would take it from my hand but the other night I brought home a pizza for my self and she came out what smelled so darn good I took some of cheese cooled it for her she snatched it out of my hand and ran to her little hide out,I also gave her the other day fried plantain witch is a type of banana a co-worker suggested sweet potato and other root vegies.

Mixing different substrates usually helps with this. Fitch actually holds tunnels surprisingly well! I used on its own to check how it holds tunnels (although my boys get a lot of cardboard, so it ended up mixing with it at the end) and it seemed to be fine. But I would recommend adding a layer of hay, as it does help holding the tunnels, it's also great for them to put in their nest if they so wish.

Welcome! Its nice you are giving them a retirement home. I plan to set-up a "retirement center" for elderly rodents next year.

Just let them get familiar with your scent, just putting in your hand to sniff, and just even talking to them. You be surprised that they will sit and listen to you. I know i was with my boys. Like the other members say, treats offered to them normally do the trick they associate your hand with a treat and will clamber and go half onto your hand. But make sure to give them a treat after, not nice to trick the little ones.
But i do have a question for you. When did you get the little wooden houses from, i can't seem to find them online ^^;;;
And i hope you have fun with the little guys, because they are a joy to watch ^^

I get the wooden houses too, though maybe not the same ones. They sell them in all the Petcos and Petsmarts in my area.

Thank you for all the replies. Sahara and Gobi have settled in well and are lovely to have I'll add some pics of them in the photo section. The wooden houses came with the tank which I bought from zooplus, I haven't seen them being sold separately but they may have them on the website
