This morning, one of our 2 gerbils escaped. In trying to recapture it, she was crushed under the couch. It was awful.
Her sister is about 1 year old. Should we get her a companion? Or 2 pups?

soo sorry to hear what happened, may your gerbil rest in peace, my sweet Shelby tragically died while I let her play last year. Does the lone gerbil seem depressed? What is her personality like-dominate or submissive? there is info. on here about split caging and quarantining the new gerbil and what is best for a lone female.
Take care,
Tammy

As catnut mentioned, there is a lot of information here about split-caging, you can use the "search" function to find relevant threads.
I have never done introductions myself, or owned female gerbils, but I have tried to learn as much as possible about the introduction process. As your gerbil is only 1 year old, it would be a good idea to try to get her a friend, as gerbils do usually live better with a friend. However, females are usually meant to be harder to introduce than females, as they are more dominant. If your gerbils is submissive, it might be easier to pair her up, as then she might be more likely to accept someone else as the new boss, but I'm not 100% sure of this.
If you are not able to find any good threads about introductions/split-caging, let me know, and I can see if my searching skills are able to find something. (Sometimes the 'search' functions don't seem to work as well as they should.)

Since your little sweetie is still fairly young (1 yr) it would be worhtwhile and easier to introduce a new tankmake. Older females can be more difficult.
