Here they are at a week old (today). The spotted one & 2 of the plain agoutis are girls. I think (?) the pied & the other plain one are boys and Little Tiny in the middle (mottled agouti?) is consistently 2 days behind the others in his/her development so I'm not sure on that one yet. They're all getting quite active now, especially one of the plain agouti girls who seems to be the 'wild child' of the litter & keeps escaping from the nest as well as almost climbing out of the tub I put them in for the photo & also trying to sneak up my sleeve when I was holding her

Cute little pups, and *gorgeous* parents. Dad has amazing coloration, and is that a Dark-Patch I spy on mom?

So cute, can't wait to see how the little one turns out. I find it interesting that dark patching seems to occur quite happily on gerbils with colourpoint and spotting etc genes, my brain tells me that a gene that causes lightening effects should not coincide with one that causes darkening ones lol (if that is a dark patch on mum). My Crystal (spotted burmese) has a dark patch on her right shoulder blade

It is a dark patch on Ariel & she also has a small light patch further back on the opposite side so I shouldn't have been so surprised to see the patches coming through on Little Tiny pup. Here's a top view of her...

Very neat pattern! She almost looks like she has a white neck spot on top of a light gray collar!
At least as far as we "know", Dark Patching is a breakdown of the Dominant Spotting gene in a certain area. Because in addition to the white patches, DS also lightens the coat overall. So on a Sp Lilac, you'd actually visually have a Sapphire base coat with white patches. A gerbil like Ariel, who is (I'm guessing) a DP-Sp Lilac, you get a Sapphire-colored coat with white patches, and the Dark-Patch is the regular Lilac color.

That's really interesting. Her 'base' colour is lilac - mum is lilac & we also have 2 of her younger brothers from the 2nd litter who are both lilac. The spotting comes from her dad who's a pale honey colour (I get very confused between red eyed honey & argente) with red eyes & gorgeous pied markings but no darker/lighter patches anywhere else. The rest of her siblings from both litters were a mix of lilacs & honeys with only 2 others having spotting.
So is Ariel's correct colour pied lilac or mottled lilac? And Little Tiny pup - is he/she pied agouti or mottled agouti?
