I wasn't sure on whether to start online shopping for toys etc for my gerbils. The only pet shop near me is Pets at Home I the UK. I have two smaller pet shops though, one who barely sells anything and another that's pricey. Do you shop online for your gerbils? I'm looking for a ceramic type house for mines but can't find one! Argh!

Hi, It's up to you where you shop. Online pet shops are really good though and I can understand why you want to start shopping online if your nearest shop is pets at home. I live near a pets at home and a jolleyes so I have the choice of two but pets at home is expensive so I can understand why you want to shop online, plus there is so much more variety online. Online shops are really good, here are the ones I recommend; Zooplus Amazon Viovet Pet Planet Pet Supermarket Pet Warehouse Hope I Helped PetMad15

I would also recommend checking out pound shops, etc. Sometimes they have good sized tealight holders, and other bits and bobs that you can use for your gerbils. (They at least used to sell a bunch of willow sticks, much cheaper than getting them from a pet shop.) At the moment they are selling Halloween themed tealight holders, which are quite big, so could work as a hiding place.
Chinchillas2shop have some cheap wooden things as well. They are simple toys, but sometimes it's good to get just some cheap wood pieces for gerbils, considering how they usually destroy everything rather quickly anyway!

We used to buy everything in PAH but with so many tanks it was costing a fortune so I started to use my imagination a bit more. We have a stash of jars (3 girls insist on sleeping squished into a large Nutella jar even tho they have a lovely cosy wooden house), I got ceramic plant pots for 50p each on a market, we save all cardboard boxes, hubby brings home toilet roll tubes from work (40 people go through quite a lot in a week!), our 2 free weekly newspapers are torn into strips & put in for them to shred. I've also made lots of stuff using free offcuts of kiln dried untreated wood from our local joiners & aquarium (pet safe) sealant. We found an ad on Gumtree where someone had chopped a willow tree down & was giving it away as firewood. We filled the car with branches, chopped them up, scrubbed in saline & baked them in the oven for half an hour to kill off any nasties. The gerbils love climbing on them, tunnelling around them & chewing them & we still have loads left for when they need replacing. I do still buy some stuff in PAH (bendy playstick bridges etc...) so I'll be checking out the websites others have recommended

We don't have saline to bake stuff in. I have a tree that's outside my back garden, but I'm not sure if it's allowed. I couldn't tell you what type but it's ordinary with leaves and everything.

I found the list of woods that are safe for them here: www.egerbil.com/safe_woods_for_gerbilsWe scrubbed each piece in a strong saltwater solution & then baked them afterwards - instructions for how hot & how long are in the link. The gerbils love it & there are always people advertising wood from chopped down trees on Gumtree - you just need to make sure they can tell you what kind of tree it is

I use Chinchillas2Shop! It's a brilliant online rodent-retailer. They mostly sell chewing materials, at very reasonable prices. I'd definitely recommend it.

There is also a pet store in Sussex (UK) who sell virtually everything you could ever need (they specialize in small animals) and at excellent prices. All their products are online - but their website isn't currently working - so just call the store, pay through paypal and they will post it out to anywhere in the UK (or abroad but not sure it would still be cheap that way?) at the going postal rate. They can also special order anything else you fancy from Trixie or wherever as they have done for me in the past. Seriously - they have the lowest prices I have seen anywhere in a LONG time... www.thelittlepetplace.co.uk/small-animals.html
