Hi guys I'm posting this in hopes of getting some answer/reasons or theory as to what happen with my dear Xena's babies let me start off this is Xena and Hero's second litter! They had their first one quite a while ago of seven cuties both black and agouti! This was their first litter ever! Hero came from a breeder in Ontario that my friends pet shop was able to order for me and Xena was a rescue at 14 monthes (she lost her tail due to a pet store worker picking her up by it so nobody wanted her! I instantly fell in love) Xena and Hero we're buddies since the moment I introduced them no chasing/biting nothing and it was surprising for both being over a year old!
Xena did amazing for both their first litter six out of the seven pups survived the one I lost was in the beginning of the first two weeks just when they were getting their peach fuzz! I cried losing her as I thought she was my only agouti female in the litter! But she had a kinked tail so I believe she may just had a weak immune! All babies grew and I kept them for seven weeks in their 20 gallon long I soon found out there was a second agouti female and I was thrilled! I was able to rehomed both my agouti males and 1 black female! The other three I kept due to the other black female being quite a biter (don't ask me why since none of her other siblings it parents have ever bit me like this girl!) and another black male due to no interest in him what-so-ever!
So Xena went ahead and gave birth to a litter of eight! Everything went well all babies made it successfully to five and half weeks! I had already decided I wanted to keep the entire litter since I was retiring Xena anyways and I was able to find an awesome deal of six tanks with lids for $50! Hero had been removed and he moved in with his black son I kept the agouti female which I named Gabby and i loved her to bits. She was my favorite other then my Xena of course.
Well three days ago tragedy struck and I found one of my little black babies half eaten in the tank I removed her from tank! I then processed to move the entire family into a brand new 20 gallon I picked up and started washing the other like crazy! I should mention that my babies are kept on Kleenex and corncob bedding as I found my first litter did catch a bit of URI from the carefresh because it's dusty and that's why my babies might have shown signs of URI! I prepared to take the first litter to the vet but they all seemed better within a few days!
The he next day I woke up an again found another baby dead this time just laying on his side i fed the gerbils and carried on I came home later and found Gabby dead!!! I was devastated why on earth would my first litter baby out any would be dead?! She was covered in diarrhea-Two hours later another agouti baby dropped dead! I have Xena and five babies left. Every baby has diarrhea three babies seems extremely active still and the diarrhea is clearing up however two of the smaller ones still seem to be fading sadly at such a weak state I would hate to travel the hour and half to the vet as I have medication already for them, nurtuion packets and KRM all ready!
What at on earth could be going on!? All that I could think I changed is I slowly added some different food to their diet- is this my fault did I kill Gabby and the other three :,(
