I want to get a wheel for my gerbils but I'm not sure what is best, here are my 2 options: 1 a mesh wheel, but they can get their toes caught. What's the possibility of that happening? 2 a solid plastic wheel, but they can chew it up and possibly swallow some plastic. So I'm not sure which is best any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! (:

I got mine a wooden wheel www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small_pets/accessories/exercise_wheels/254367?gclid=Cj0KEQiA2b20BRDj4buduIG-y9EBEiQAhgMGFTFqm8dB-jLoMNDrbQ0ZkfctVw1QEQxy160x--3FhrIaAj358P8HAQ (the bigger of the two of course), it's just about big enough for most of my girls (except Mia as she's a very big built gerbil). Took them a month or two to figure out how to use it, but they love it now and my chubbyish one is now slender and sleek again! I prefer it as I don't have to worry about toes or tails getting hurt or about them chewing it. However, it does take up a lot of space and, depending on the size of your gerbils, it might not be big enough for them (mine measures approx 7 inches diameter on the inside, which is just about okay for mine but I believe 8 inches is recommended). Oh and it uses ball bearings, so the spinning motion is very quiet. Edit: Actually, looking at the measurements shown on that site, I'm now wondering if I was sent the wrong one and ended up with a smaller one instead, I might just have to try ordering another big one and compare them (and then if it is bigger, see if I can squeeze it in or not)...

You could try to get a plastic wheel 2nd hand, and see how they like it? My boys didn't touch their Silent Spinner when they had it, but I upgraded them to Wheel 'y' Fit mesh wheel as needed bigger than 6.5" wheel. I think buying 2nd hand can be a good idea if you aren't sure do your gerbils even like running on it. Only one of my 2 runs on their wheel, and it seems that even has weeks when he can't be bothered to run on it.

Thanks, that sounds like a good idea. 2 of mine like their ball, but I can't get them out all the time, so I thought the wheel would be a good idea.

Both mesh and plastic wheels are fine, so long as by plastic you mean Silent Spinner. I've been using both for years, no problems whatsoever.
