Someone is selling this tank that they bought from Zooplus on my local selling website. I looked it up on Zooplus and it's just a base tank with no levels in it. Would it suit two gerbils? Or should I find something else? I'm worried about the no levels as I have a tank for my other pairs, I hand built and added on a gerbilarium level on to it. This tank already has a lid onto it, but no levels. Would my gerbils mind no levels? If I gave them lots of megazorb in their cage instead for burrowing? It is more than 2ft long so should be 20 gallons+ and you can't certainly add your own shelves and layers to it yourself to create depth. I have a few tanks without built-in layers and once I have added all sorts of houses, tunnels and bridges it doesn't look any more boring than my shelved ones.
I'm sure your gerbils will love what you do with the place...

Is it normal for them to chase each other around the new tanks, sort of arch and then run around normally again?! They've been doing it for an hour. They seem to love it though! It's massive and has hundreds of stuff inside.

Did you transfer some of the bedding from their old cage over? If not, it may be the new smells confusing them. I would keep an eye on them and they should settle down after a while once their scents have started rubbing off. If there is any fighting, you could temporarily split them for a short while.
The tank looks good by the way, we've never had shelves but always had very deep bedding and some hanging bridges etc. and our gerbils were fine with it.

If they are females, they may have been 'arching' as they are having a 'heat' where their whole back seems to lift up towards their shoulders and they do much running around and chasing.
Females in heat tend to be much more lively, run towards their tank mates head on and then turn around and present their back to them usually running away in the process just a few steps or onto a suitable perch or flat area.
What were they actually doing?

Thanks. They are fine now. Just running to each other and exposing their sides and then running away. No fighting going on at all.
