Mine have always liked nut knot nibblers. I used to be able to buy these cool wooden jungle gym things that you had to assemble yourself, they were awesome. I don't see them for sale anymore though. Anything made of wood and big enough to not get buried in the bedding is good. I use bird toys mostly now, you just have to makes sure they are made of gerbil safe stuff.

would twigs be okay for a chew toy? i have some berry bushes in my front yard, the ones with the red berries on them.

I'm sure certain types of branches would be fine, but some are surely poisonous, so you'll need to find out the exact species and then try and find out if it's safe.
