Would it be possible to make the topper stand on the ledge things? There's a "building a DIY topper" thread just below/above your thread, so have a look at that. There has also been some other DIY topper posts in the past, I think it was in the gerbil tank setup pictures thread. I tried to do a quick search but couldn't find it, I can see later if I can find the one I mean Have you considered using an old hamster/bird cage for the topper instead?

Hey man, You could easily just ignore the inner edge/lip altogether. I've just finished mine and it sits on top of the tank (same dimensions) with an extra piece that over laps the exterior. If you look at the first few pics you can see it without this extra bottom piece I'm talking about and then in the later pics you can see its added. This way the topper isnt affected by anything on the internal of the tank. pics: imgur.com/a/P2qe8

I cant see why not, you could use a similar method to mine but only on three sides? Then make a lid for the remaining section maybe?
I'm curious why you wouldnt want to do it for the whole length of the tank though? thats just potential extra space you're not taking advantage of!

You could possibly leave gap in the floor of the topper, that would give you better access to the bottom area. Or make sure that the ladder hole is wide enough for your hand to easily go in and out. I used to have a gerbilarium for my gerbils, and I placed it so that there's a gap between the wall and where the floor starts, and it made it easier to put things and take things out. The gerbils did also use it as a place where to jump and down, they rarely even used their ladder!

Thanks everyone for the help! Unfortunately I don't think I will be making a cage topper anymore as my dad doesn't have much time to help me on it and he is already working on another project at the moment. I also had a concern about bar chewing. Yoda is quite the bar chewer in his playpen so I think he would be a bar chewer in the topper. Kylo also likes to climb bars so I would also worry about him climbing and getting hurt:(. So in the end I doubt I will be making a topper anytime soon but maybe someday in the future:) I think that is a good choice if Yoda chews bars of his playpen. One of my gerbils is a bar chewer, and I was always worried he'd damage his teeth (some gerbils do) when I had a topper for them (he didn't do it too often, but often enough to make me worry). Even though they have been living in a tank for about 3 months now, he sometimes still goes for the bars in the playpen when I let them play in it.
