We often see people on here with Scent Gland Tumours and it seems quite a common thread to start, but I was just wondering how prevalent these were in the general pet population to see if it isn't all doom and gloom.
(Current Running Total:
Total Gerbils: 48 Males Total Tumours: 8
Total females with suspected SGT: 2
7 contributors so far)
I know people have different numbers of gerbils so some people see more than others but i just wondered if you could take a moment to say simply at the start of your reply your total number of male gerbils kept (including those no longer with us) and then the number of those who had a tumour on their scent gland that you saw, even if it was just a small wart-sized one.
Obviously only include gerbils you had all their life - and only those you currently have who are over 1 year old. Also if you could only include males on these figures for simplicity, but if you had a female with a scent gland tumour, please add those details later in the reply.
So for example my sister's would be:
Total: 2 males Tumours: 0
She has only had 4 gerbils in total anyway and hers all had the all clear.
My brothers would be:
Total: 2 males Tumours: 0
Thank you for your time, as I really hope to see that tumours aren't that common, it just seems that way online.

Total: 3 males Tumours: Maybe 1, there was never a lump but in the last few weeks or so of his life one of the boys did start picking/biting at his scent gland. He was at least 3 years old if not 4 at that time. Died of old age/cold and didn't take him to a vet for the small injuries he caused to his gland, so we didn't confirm what it was.
Are you going to keep an overall tally in your OP as people add their data?

Ive only had one male before as I usually only have females. It looks like you're asking for males but I'll give my total of females to give just a bit more data.
Total: 10 Females Tumors: 1

...didn't take him to a vet for the small injuries he caused to his gland, so we didn't confirm what it was. I will take that as a SGT in this case, as I think a lot of gerbils get growths on their scent glands but they never turn into 'bad ones'. I have had a few unidentified lumps on scent glands myself but if they don't grow or change in any way, I don't take them to the vets either. And I will be keeping a tally myself in my lovely 'gerbil notebook' - but not sure what an OP is - is it totally obvious and I'm just being daft?

Total: 10 Females Tumors: 1 I am very interested in whether females get tumours too, but if we included female data in the basic tally we would just have something like: Total: 10 zillion gerbils and then we wouldn't be able to see any patterns. So with your 1 SGT in a female - was it just a small one, or did it turn nasty like the male ones can? Thanks.

I left for one weekend on a trip and she passed then. I believe she had it for a few weeks before. My dad described her gland more swollen and irritated when he found her. I don't know for sure if the tumor caused her death, though.

OP is Original Post or Original Poster, so the first post in a thread or the person who made the first post in a thread depending on context ^^

I think I will include this anyway Asher as it was 'something' amiss with her scent gland, and that is what I am sort of trying to accumulate general info on.
I had a female who died of all the normal symptoms of old age, and only after she passed I noticed that her scent gland was a little bit rough around the edges and possibly misshapen. I doubt if that is what caused the death of my girl either, but it may well have been part of the signs of accumulated problems in old age.
She was often rubbing her scent all over the place so perhaps she was using it as much as the guys do?
Hmm?

Ya, I have no idea why I had that many, but hopefully this means my current 2 won't get any.

I've kept gerbils for many years so have had around 30 males, Out of them 4 have had SGT ... all at the same time, despite being of differing ages and not all related to each other, they were also the only gerbils I had at the time, this still perplexes me.
Females = 0
