I can't seem to login, so I guess I'll post here. I came home yesterday to find my gerbil, Yahtzee, stuck on the wire of a cage. I'm trying to introduce Yahtzee back to Mouse, and since they were together before, it might be possible they could be together again. Anyway, Yahtzee's foot got stuck on the part that holds the 2 sides of the wire cage together, and he was dangling upside down. With some help, I was able to free him. He is not walking on the foot (its the back right one) but he still can climb, walk, eat, drink, and everything except run. He doesn't move the foot, but it doesn't drag on the ground because he keeps it close to him. My gerbils have about a 55 gallon tank space, with half being a wire top, and the other an aquarium. Right now, I have to keep Yahtzee in a small "Hamster Home Starter Kit." (which is apparently sold to be used permanently, when it's way to small?) It is my travel cage, and I don't want to keep Yahtzee in there forever. Sorry that the story is kind of confusing, but in short, I think my gerbil has a torn tendon, and is there any way to heal it/make him feel better? Also, can he ever have a companion? Or will they hurt him? Thanks for your help!

A vet could prescribe painkillers for him if they felt he needed them. He'll most likely recover on his own, though it might take a while. When two of our girls declanned, one got bitten quite badly on one of her back feet and legs and took to holding it up and limping, but after a couple of weeks (and antibiotics and painkillers- which we were giving her anyway due to an illness) she was fine and hasn't had a problem with her foot/leg since, or at least not that we've noticed. She still lives with her other sister.
One thing you can do (if you haven't already) is put all his food and water on the ground floor, so he doesn't have to go far from his nest to get the necessities and thereby reducing him overusing his bad leg and making it take longer to heal.
