I got this silver nutmeg *female* from a breeder who said she was having trouble pairing her with a male. I'd have to look up age but fully adult long enough for more than one breeding attempt so she/it should be easy to tell gender. The gerbil has genes I'd like to try to introduce to my area or I wouldn't attempt to pair her up. I went to try putting her with a young male but when I checked gender I was uncertain. I compared to several of my adults males and females and I am still uncertain. The openings are not right on top of each other with some black going down the area but it's not like the distance and darker furred areas on any of the males either. I don't have pics. I can attempt them but I don't have any help to hold the gerbil or camera. I was just wondering if an inbetween gerbil is likely to be one a specific gender or if it can go either way with both males and females that don't fully match their gender.

What do you mean by 'trouble pairing her up with a male' - you say she is old enough for one breeding attempt - did they manage to get her with a male?
I would want to know more about why she wouldn't pair up as that could affect your own breeding of her. If she is a gerbil unsocialite, she may not make very good breeding stock for your new line? However, if they just didn't do the introduction well, it could just have been that?
Do you have any more information?
And usually over 3 months of age - if you have a male and he is warm - you will definitely see his man conkers...
If no conkers, perhaps you would be best to put them in a split cage and swap as usual for a week-ish without an actual intro and see if she comes into heat. Then you will know she is female.
Have you bred gerbils before or will this be your first time?

I've never seen a true intersex gerbil, but I've had a very late-blooming male. We'd really need pictures to be able to help.
