One of my gerbils , Cosmo, keeps nipping me. I have tried to re-tame him several times but he always has the same problem. Something I noticed is he doesn't seem to be doing in as a sign of aggression, he will be sitting in my hand totally calm then out of the blue nip me then back to calm then nip me again shortly after. I was wondering if their is anyway to stop him. Any advice would be appreciated.

Does he only nip you when you're holding him?

He doesn't always, sometimes it has been when I put my hand in the tank to say hi.

I was thinking that when you hold him, it might be his way of telling you that he doesn't want you to hold him anymore.
Do you always wash your hands (with unscented soap) before handling them? One of my gerbils is good at nibbling my hands every once in a while when I put it in their cage, I think it might smell like food to him if I haven't washed my hands after handling some food, etc.

Sorry it I didn't respond earlier. Yes I do always wash my hands before visiting them although I sometimes touch gerbil food or cardboard, so that probably is it. Ill try washing my hands right before handing them and see if that helps, thank you.
