I presume that the advertisements posted are generated by Proboards via some proprietary algorithm.
Has anyone else noticed ads for some "strange device" that "is wiping out rodent infestations"? Seems rather disturbingly ironic, under the circumstances.

I haven't seen that advert. I mostly get adverts from Proboards themselves for things like socks and phone cases but I have seen Zooplus ads or something about bitcoin.

Not seen that ad Scott, and yea ironic! lol They also had one ad about some BS device which claimed to save you huge amounts on your electricity bill and protect your devices, seems all it was a bunch of capacitors, which could've protected devices, but no way could it cut your bill by 80-90%! . Anyway I complained about the advert to the proboard forum, (replied to by someone called Scott ) which lead me to complain to Google (who run the ad's), but their was something about their process which stopped me being able to complete that (can't remember what now).

I think the adds are triggered by your other searches rather than the pages they show on - but yes, that is rather bad taste.
Mine are always about things I regularly visit or search for - including LOTS of Zooplus and Bunny food recently...

I largely get ads which aren't related to my searches! lol e.g atm I've got one about clothes and one about wigs! I never buy or search for clothes online, and I don't need a wig!

Wigs???
Well, yes, people can chose what keywords they want their ad to be shown for - so maybe wig people sell a lot of wigs to people who search for car auto parts and [insert most searched for topic here]?
Hmm?

Boo...
Perhaps you can report that ad - I don't know though as this is a 'free' forum because of the ads?
Hmm?

I reported the ad as "inappropriate" at the time but here it is, two weeks later.

Yea that's not what we want to see here If you have a VPN, that'll throw the ads off course! VPN off here atm, but for some reason I'm getting ads for womens clothes again!

I think, to some degree, the banner ads are based on keywords in the thread topic, perhaps in addition to tracking info--I was reading the thread on "Gerbil safe wood stain" and sure enough there were ads for "Best Deck Stains" and "Wood Ceiling Designs" and "Easy Ways to Remove Wood Stain," etc. I think VPNs have a limited effect on ads, though--the ad analytics use browser-based cookies and other tracking techniques, so the site tracking stays with you even if your IP changes.

I know if I VPN from a country with a different language, I get their language in the ads Curious anyway, I have an ad blocker, but it's off for this site.

Or maybe something more direct: the ad server scans posts and sees discussions about what's poisonous for gerbils, which often operates by extension to studies on rats, etc., and the algorithm doesn't know it's about ways to AVOID harming rodents and so serves up ads for HOW to do so.
