When I checked the teeth of one of my gerbils today I noticed that it's something wrong with his lower teeth. One tooth looks like it has been broken and some how got stuck at his lip or something. Or maybe it's still growing but has started to grow in an other direction right through his lip. It might be an infection going on. It's hard to tell because the lip has grown a bit stiff an swollen. He's eating without any problems and is awake, running around like his brother. If you take a close look at the picture you can see there is some abnormality going on around his lower right tooth. If you have experienced something similar please tell me what you did. Did you go to the vet, what were their opinion? I'm thinking about going to the vet but I think I'll await a day or to.

is it a scab? I"ve noticed that when you "pull" their mouthes open, they've got funny shaped lower lips. he looks fine in the pictures. By the way- very nice shots- super hard to get mouth pictures... my camera isn't so great...

It looks like he's lost his lower right tooth or like it has started to grow in the wrong direction or something... I'm checking his teeth out quite often and they normally grow properly and look nice. He's had some problems with his upper teeth once though. He lost one of them and I had to visit the vet to get them trimmed But this looks lite something else...

I tried to putt his lip away from the tooth or whatever it is that's stuck at his lip but I couldn't. The white piece was stuck at his lip. I couldn't see any tooth beside his normal left lover tooth though. This is what makes me wonder if he's lost his right tooth or if it's just started to grow at the wrong direction :S I'll see if I can get my brother to come over to help me hold his so that I can take a closer look and maybe try to "pull" at the lip with a forceps or something, just to understand what it is...
Hmmm the more I look at it the more it looks like the right tooth has started to grow further along then normal. This has made it grow through the lip! Is this really possible?! IF this is the case; Is it able to let a vet pull the right tooth of and is it possible for it to start growing were it should then?

That looks pretty swollen to me and it must hurt him. I think your best bet would be to get a vet to take a look at it. Hopefully they can sort it out for him one way or another Caroline

I personally don't think it will sort itself out on it's own and may need some vetinary intervention of some sort - but that's just my opinion Glad he's going for a check-up tomorrow - good luck and tell us what the vet said Caroline

Well, I'm home from the vet now... His lower set of teeth are growing a bit crooked. This made his lip got stuck at the right tooth sometime and obviously he couldn't get it of again. Then the tooth had started to grow through the lip and the lip might have pushed the tooth to grow more crooked then it did at the beginning. The vet send him to sleep to look close to it and they did rip the lip up to loosen the tooth. Hopefully the lip will heal around the tooth and make room for the tooth to grow a bit crooked without taking the way through the lip again. If we're lucky the tooth might even grow back a bit to it's origin position or at least move to a more normal position to grow... If it doesn't I can just hope that he will be able to eat and trim his teeth by him self or maybe I have to help him trimming them (the vet showed me how I can do) By the moment he's okay, He's had some painkillers and will have some for 2 more days I'll see if I can get you a pic, the teeth are having a BIG space between them now, he must had been in such a pain before...

Well that's a good result for him He's certainly going to have a sore mouth for a few days poor fella. Suppose you'll just have to wait and see if he can still feed himself ok, if not then mush some of his food up with a few drops of water to help him get some down. Glad it's sorted Caroline

if not then mush some of his food up with a few drops of water to help him get some down. i found mine didn't like wet food much, especially when they have a sore mouth. they will happily eat crumbed food, not completely to dust though as they still need to use their back teeth. another fave is cooked frozen peas, not petit pois as they are too small, the bigger the better. i do a saucer full in the microwave and just supplement a few twice a day. I'd like to know if there is a knack to holding them so i can trim his teeth. His bottom incisors are growing much faster than the top and we're having no luck getting them to meet. I'd like to do it myself, the vet having showed me, but i can't hold him in a way to see his teeth well. Does anyone know how to do it? thanks

I make his head be between the thumb and the index finger and I try to make his feet me inside my hand to make him unable to struggle and push me away with his little feet. Then I hold him upside down and use the right hand to pull his lips away from his mouth as you can see on the pic in the beginning of this tread. Then, if I were you I would make someone else trim his tooth while you're holding him. If you don't understand how I mean just tell me and I'll take a picture of it tomorrow. Good luck... By the way, How did the vet told you to do? Did he tell you to clip them of or to polish them?

Ooo! That's good news ;D
These little fuzzballs never cease to amaze me as to how they adapt to physical problems - such troopers! ;D
