Exactly I have had smaller gerbils look fatter. My lad was a particularly large gerbils and I do think you need to take that into account, although trying to measure the length of a gerbil might be a little difficult!!

Angie, my husband just saw the picture of Freddie and said, "Is that a degu?" ;D ROFL! Freddie's so cute - give him a big squish for me! Scrapperdog, if you still think your gerbil should lose weight, you can take the chunky one out for a run when you feed the other one. Also, feed the sunflower seeds and other fattening bits from their food mix as treats to make sure the big one isn't eating them all herself. And as others have said, less treats, more exercise! Aww...we'd NEVER laugh at Freddie - he's a sweetie! Honestly, I think that Ben's beginning to challenge your two, Angie. He's turning into quite the squishy fellow. I'll try to get a good picture and weigh him today. Linda

Well, I weighed everyone this evening and Ben (below) is now 120g. For comparison, Charlie (who's always been a large gerbil) has dropped to 95g and Angus is up to 90g. The girlies are between 55 and 60 g. Ben has been a bit of a piggy lately - he's been gobbling up the special meals I've prepared for Charlie (who continues to have trouble with his teeth). Linda

I am going to the pet store now to get equiptment and I am going to get a wheel as well, they ran on the old wheel but it developed a squeek and would wake me up at night when they ran on it so I piched it. Er, sorry to burst you bubble, but all wheels sqeak. I have slient spiners, and they still make noise. Just grease the axles up with a little bit of VEGETABLE OIL. (not any other kind, please!) Works as good as new! for about a week, anyhow. >.>

None of my Silent Spinners squeak -they do make noise as the base moves across the glass shelves, but the wheel itself is very quiet. Strange.....

silent spinners run on ball bearings instead of being lubricated with oil or graphite.
But in my experience a heavy gerbil puts too much strain on the spindle and it tends to break.
That said I haven't heard of this problem in a while so it's quite probable that they have been strengthened!

I personally don't think they are suitable for gerbils. Great for dipodils though I recommend Wodent wheels myself. A bit pricey but very, very nice/
