Wow, I didnt know that. Never would have thought either. Since I've gotten all my gerbils, I've always burnt incense and its never effected them. Hmm, I'll have to stop just in case.

This is also true of cats with incense for those of you that also have cats. Essential oils might also be something to watch out for near gerbils (I haven't specifically looked into it with gerbils). With cats these can be extremely dangerous. These animals cannot tolerate specific things in these substances I know with cats it is keytones I am still trying to find out about gerbils but i would suspect that since cats are sensitive about so many things that they would be very similar to the more sensitive small animals. I also do know that febreeze isnt good for around animals at all and I cant remember the specifics about it but I read a warning about it somewhere. I do not use any of these types of things in my house or around my animals to be on the safe side. So I agree with other people and just becareful with any substance you use around them just incase.

Thanks for the warning, I have a flatmate who burns this stuff all the time (even though its not allowed although we aren't allowed pets either and I have my gerbils and sticks), I do sometimes have my door open when she starts burning them, although never for long. I will be making sure my door stays closed after reading this when I smell the stuff, luckily she hasn't done it this week since I only just got my new gerbils.

This is a little late but, oh well, so Febreeze is possibly bad for them? What deodorizer do you think is safe? I like to spray my room once a week when i vacuum to get rid of the doggy smell. Also will Windex hurt them?

I've used febreeze for about as long as I've had critters- non of them have appeared to be bothered. Gerbils, birds, cats or rabbits, or fish.

OK, my dogs aren't phased by it either. And my last gerbil wasn't. I will probably go on using it and watch the little guys closely. Thanks Do you think candles are ok if the windows are open?

We like to burn incense but i didn't know that! We've never used it in front of any of our animals but now we'll take even more precaution.

I'm pretty sure candles are okay. I did use incense without a problem for years until I read this. But I still use candles and they are okay

i use inscent sticks and cones, and none of my gerbils seem bothered by it.
i think because i have both windows open when i burn them that the ventilation is adequate.

I burn sticks and my gerbils have never had a problem but that might be because they are naturally scented.

seems like a lot of gerbils haven't had any problems with it... maybe yours might have an issue with it's breathing already... or it could have possibly stressed them out. I've used candle, air fresheners, etc. for years... i've had gerbils and other animals for 10 years now and none have ever had any problems... though I now have one that gets stressed a lot but haven't seen anything like that affect her. and so far my gerbils have lived to be on average 4 years old. Some a little longer.
But with so many people not having any problems, you either don't have proper ventilation or maybe your animals are just more susceptible to the incense. Also like someone else said it could be the ingredients. Animals can also be allergic to things we might not think they would be...
Sorry I just dont believe in freaking out about something unless it's affecting a lot of people and there is proof what exactly is the cause....

Holy goodness. I have about 50 or so sticks of incense just waiting to be burned, but now I'll think twice before lighting one up. Since I'm in a one room apartment, I think I'll just wait till springtime when I can open the windows wide and turn the ceiling fans on and the bathroom fan. I usually did something like that before I moved out anyway because it bothered my dad's nose a lot. I'll make sure to monitor my boys when I burn my sandalwood candles as well! This is something that truly wouldn't have crossed my mind. Hm... wouldn't cigarette smoke do the same thing as incense?
