I dont know how to tell if its broken or if it will fall of if it is broken but: IF the tail falls off she will still be normal in every other way lots of people have disabled gerbils on here, Angie is one who springs to mind. she has 2 disabled sisters after their mum attacked them.

Oh... And as soon as I carefully put her back in the cage she went strait to one of the places they sleep. Then I got Paris and put her in the cage too. I can't see in where they sleep because they have a TON of bedding surrounding it. I could see she was moving around at that time and Paris was in the other part of the cage where they have been sleeping more often. I felt really bad because I thought Paris was going to go sleep in the other area because she's used to it. I left the room for a minute though and when I came back Paris was in by Britney like they normally are when they go to bed. I'm so scared, I hope Britney is ok! And her tail too for that matter, but more importantly her!

I'm glad to know she will be ok, I am still going to hate myself if it falls off though! I feel so bad. Does anyone else know how long it would take to fall off if it is going to?

FROM NGS SITE: It comes as something of a shock when your Gerbil suddenly emerges minus half of its tail. The Gerbil’s tail with its striking black tip, is designed so it is easily shed if caught by a predator. The same thing can happen if you pick up the Gerbil by the tip of its tail or if the Gerbil gets its tail trapped underneath something. It looks awful. There is a lot of blood and the tail bone is exposed. However, 99% of broken tails heal without veterinary treatment. Within a few days, the bone just withers away and the Gerbil is left with half a tail. It many not look as beautiful but its ability to get around and generally get on with its life is not impeded in any way. still doesnt say how to see if it is broken but looks like it may fall off hope your gerbil will be ok and it isnt broken

Hmmm... I had read that too, thanks for finding it also though, I appreciate the help!... She is awake now and she just crawled up the tube and over into the other cage... I stuck my hand in with some sunflower seeds and she is eating just like normal. It is so hard to tell for sure about her tail... It clearly is completely intact, but I can't tell if she is holding it any differant than normal or not. Maybe it just hurt it when I got it with my hand... I sure hope so, but the main thing is that she is eating normaly! :-) ...I just looked at it again when she came out of the kleenex box she went in to eat the seeds. The tail doesn't look bent at all, I guess that is a good sign. It looks normal and when she stood on top of the box I could see she's not just draging it, although it was halfway down where it got cought so still hard to tell. She is chewing up a paper towel roll now though. She seems to be acting normaly! :-) Now Paris came over to play with the roll too!

lol they sound like a happy pair I'd imagine you'd be able to either feel or see a break in the tail. now she has settled I'd pick her up and gentle feel down her tail.

I'm too scared to right now, I was thinking of maybe not taking them out of the cage for 2 or 3 days until I know for sure if the tail is ok... I am guessing it would partly start to fall off by then, like maybe at least the skin or something. I guess I'm just kind of worried that she's shaken up from getting her tail caught yet to, I don't want to stress her by feeling around on her tail, specially if it still hurts at all. If it is hurt at all, I just want to make sure it heals before I bother her too much... She is the harder of the two to catch, too so that might be difficult to do without worry of hurting her tail if it is sore too. This is a link to thier pics if you want to see... www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=16423&l=dfcce&id=513856747 How many gerbils do you have?

If I was you I would, you may feel bad for hurting her, but you will feel relived if you check it and find it isnt broken, it will be a whieght of your mind.
Although from what you have described, it isnt broken.
Spike had a broken rear leg from when he was a pup and would constaly drag it behind him..... it never bothered him but I dunno what normal behaviour is when they break there tales.
