I have no intention of finding out by trial and error, but was just curious if anyone knew.

nah, i don't think so they might do actually, but Mongolian Gerbils do come from the Gobi Desert, where there isn't much water (at all lol ) so i guess they'd be no reason for them to learn or adapt to swim hehe ;D

I think that they proberbly could swim... Thunder has paddled through water once (when I was trying the water method of introductions) Though, I doubt that it'll ever be one of their favorite activities and I'm not sure how good it'd be for them

Lol they hate water That's how the water method works - they have to work together otherwise one or both gets soaked! Anyway, they probably wouldn't be able to swim - I mean, doggy paddle for a bit? *shrugs* But i think they prefer the dry land and solid ground (although a couple of my cages love it when I get out of the shower and lean over them - "It's raining!!")

Gerbils can swim, actually like most rodents they are pretty good at it. But gerbils DO NOT like water!!

My mate's, daughter's hamster (that recently had to be PTS ), actually managed to fall into the TOILET! of all places and managed to swim for a bit before being 'rescued!' She ended up being a ripe old age of 3!! which is pretty good for a hammie Not so sure about gerbies though Caroline

My water linked into one small tank once and i pulled chad out, he was soaking and sooo angry so, i think they could swim if they got over the hatred of getting wet

Why on earth would a gerbil kept in captivity want to swim??? I for one would`nt think of puting my gerbils NEAR water! Not even for introductions when you can use a split cage...

Yes they can, when I had still mongolians, I let them walk in my bathroom. They cannot do much damage there. One time I heard all kind of splashing, and one had managed to climb onto the toilet (clean by the way), and fell in it. He managed to swim and stay above until I came to get him out of the water.

Some of you will have heard this story before. I had a litter of pups whose eyes where just about opening. All where black and I coudln't easily tell them apart. I was checking over all my gerbils and preparing some adults for a show so had a jug of of lukewarm water for wiping over pale, stained coats. Well I lifted up one of the pups which suddenly ran out of my hand (anyone whose handled gerbil pups knows this feeling). It landed in the jug and swam around strongly. I fished it out and immediately discovered how diificult holding a WET pup is. I'm afraid he went for a second bath, this time a sand bath!!! After patting the poor thing dry with some kitchen towel I put the still damp, sandy bedraggled bundle back in the nest with its mum and siblings. Next day I couldn't have told you which shiny black pup had the adventure but all of them had their eyes open!! As Peter discovered the swimming instinct is very strong in gerbils.

LOL poor thing! You'll find out which one it is when one seems to have a terror of water and sand baths!!!

this was a long while ago..around 1 and half years. All those pups grew to love sandbaths but sadly the line had problems with fitting and had to be abandoned...I still have a few blacks from that litter though
