I read that they warent nocturnal before i got them but mine seem to sleep till about 8 in the evening (just when i gets dark) and then spring to life. Ive only had them a few days so maybe they are just in this pattern or are they nocturnal afterall?

Interesting. But I thinks it's because you haven't got your gerbils for long so they still adjusting to their new surroundings. In general gerbils aren't nocturnal, they sleeps for about 4 h, then they are awake for 4 h and so on..

They come out a bit buring the day but usually for just a bit of a poke around and then back to the nest. They only really come to life at about 8. I'd say they are just getting used to things.
Thanks

They are usually up at dawn and dusk and also for short periods inbetween so not strictly nocturnal at all Caroline

8pm is the magic time at my place when all 4 become very active, same thing early in the morning. Between these times there's usually one or two active as the others sleep. It's 1:32pm right now and 2 are active, 2 asleep.
I guess part of the 'they all have their own personalities' relates to sleep patterns too.
Another thing I've noticed is that if all 4 are asleep together, 1 seems to be on guard duty and sleeps lighter than the rest. Every so often, particularly if there's a noise, 1 comes out and quickly looks around and then goes back to bed.

They're diurnal which means they're awake/asleep through various periods of the day and night.

Diurnal means they're awake during the day. Nocturnal means they're awake at night. Crepuscular means they're awake at dawn and dusk. ...but I'm not sure what you'd call repeated short sleep/wake cycles.

Nice Actually gerbils are basically crepuscular (hence your evening and morning activity bursts) but they are also opportunist and will wake up to check whats going on during both day and night!! Also they will learn to adapt to your times to a certain extent. One other thing, unlike hamsters it is perfectly OK to wake gerbils up, in fact they are often pleased with the attention!!

So there still getting up and about at 8 in the evening but now they are only out for an hour or two. For all i know they are up all night because during the day they are barely out at all. They are 2-3 months old, would this have anything to do with it or are my lot just lazy buggers?
