The following is a list of substances that are toxic to gerbils. Remember, any treat in excess is BAD. The basis of the gerbil diet should be a well-balanced staple mix. Treats should be given in moderation (1-2 times per week). Foods to Avoid:Avocado - Toxic to their hearts Black nightshade Buttercups Chocolate(contains theobromine, which is toxic to many animals)
Clematis Clover - high in prussic acid (cyanide) Coltsfoot - can cause cancer and is hepatoxic (toxic to the kidneys of rodents)
Daffodil Dairy products in large amounts (like most mammals—including many humans—gerbils have a hard time digesting lactose)
Deadly nightshade Garlic
Hemlock Hydrangea Ivy Kidney Beans (raw)
Laburnum Laurel Oleander Poinsettia Potato (raw)
Rabbit Mix (containing antibiotic ingredients)
Rhododendron Rhubarb
Sweets Tomato leaves
Yarrow - can cause cancer
Yew Yucca
