I suppose if fired, it would be ok for them, perfect even.
Well thought of.

Oooooh! We might be getting a kiln at school, and the art teacher keeps gerbils, too. I think I'll be taking up ceramics! Tracy

I know this is quite an old thread but i came across it ages ago and thought WOW i wanna try making one of these for my gerbies! Sadly, i couldn't find any non-toxic clay here in the UK, however i have just found some clay and wanted to run it by everyone here to make sure its ok before going ahead and using it. Its called Makin's Clay and comes in many wonderful colours (i'm very drawn to the neon colours!) ;D heres their website : www.makinsclay.com/US/eng/makins/aboutus.htmI also wondered, if i made a small clay cave for one corner, would i be able to leave it in bailey and whiskey's tank? Or would it be better to just use in a play tank? I think it would be quite a fun and exciting permanent addition to their tank

I love it and so do your gerbils, apparently! Is it made from the air-drying clay, or did you have to fire it in a kiln?

xcherriepiex - I found this on that site Makin's Clay® is slightly acid when wet, it is acid free in dry stage. Makin's Clay® contains no PVC. It is certified non-toxic, and conforms to ACMI-AP safety and quality standards. It is safe to use for both adults and children above the age of 3.So it seems fine to use just make sure it is DRY before you pop it in their tanks! I don't see a problem with leaving it in the tanks to be honest, it is non toxic and it is clay, and the plant pots are made off clay (just a different type that is kiln fired) qtoffer - There are 2 different types of clay, the air drying, and the fireing clay. Either would work, if you don't have access to a kiln you would be better off doing it with the air drying clay. Though i THINK you can bake clay in your oven ... Though you would have to check. x
